D3 F1 field ready for tech inspection

Some regular racers were absent today. Someone heard they went back east to race in winter conditions. It was a typical 75 degree day in Buena Park, California.

Pete built this F1 chassis (or is it a Cukras chassis?). Foamy designed/built this new F1 chassis.

image

Here's a close up view of Foamy's latest F1 chassis featuring 64 pitch Sonic crown and pinion gears.

Note how far back the inline motor is mounted to the rear axle. 64 pitch gears gives you this option.

Doug Matthes' 2nd place car. A gorski chassis with a lot of added lead weight.

image

Oops! Camera shake!

image

Doug's Gorski chassis has been very consistent over the last 6 months of F1 races.

image

For the Kingleman track, Doug added considerable weight (127 grams total car weight).

image

Less weight was added to the rear of the chassis

image

Doug used 8/27 gear ratio

image

John Cukras winning F1 car.

image

John's F1 chassis features a floating type center body mount/weight.

image

The floating body mount/weight sits above the bottom center brass pan.

John uses Copper motor clips made from copper tubing.

image

John used 8/26 gear ratio.

Camera shake again (photographer was a bit shaky today!).

image

Dennis' F1 chassis was built over a year ago.

image

Dennis' chassis was by far the lightest podium car at 105 grams.

image

Dennis' gearing was also 8/26.

Eddie Shorer during his Can Am qualifying run

image

Video clip of "Fast" Eddie Shorer during his qualifying run. Eddie refers to himself as "not so fast" Eddie, but everyone has seen him race and he is "fast". This was only Eddie's 2nd D3 race (first F1 race), so he's learning the tight BPR Kingleman track for the first time.

Typical Warmack "attention to detail". Bryan used pop rivets to simulate the intake stacks.

image

Full rear end detail on this True Scale Porsche body is a nice feature.

Bryan Warmack discusses some Concours details with fellow D3 racers Steve Walker, Ken Dylke and Eddie Shorer.

D3 Can Am "C" Main video clip

image

What happened? Turn Marshals and racers are looking for Albert Cruz' car after it went flying after a wall blast

image

No, this is not an Easter egg hunt. Everyone is helping to find Albert's lost car!

image

Albert removes his glasses. Maybe he can find his car better without glasses.

image

The search continues. Finally after about 3 minutes, the lost car is found. Well, this proves one thing. Us old timers can't expect to race fast if we can't see the car!

image

Ah, the race resumes after the lost car is found.

image

Bryan Warmack's 2nd place car. This is a slightly modified "Warmack" chassis kit.

image

For the tight Kingleman track at BPR, Bryan added lead weight thru out.

image

This bottom view (out of focus!) of Bryan's car is very similar to the chassis kit.

image

Besides the added lead weight, a small piano wire provides tension on the front portion of the side pans which aids handling.

image

Bryan uses motor clips ( I believe these are available from McMaster/Carr)

image

Ball bearings for the rear axle.

image

Mike Steube's winning Can Am car

image

This is the same car Mike won the previous Can Am race on the Kingleman 3 months ago.

image

All bronze rod construction.

image

Close up of Mike's Can Am winner

image

Rear view of Mike's Kingleman chassis

image

Mike used 7/26 gear ratio. That's not a typo, 7/26.

image

Doug Matthes 3rd place car.

image

This is the 3rd chassis built by Doug.

image

It's based on a Gorski design, slightly modified by Doug.

image

Close up view of Doug's latest Can Am chassis.

image

Doug's workmanship continues to improve. As with most things, practice makes perfect.

image

Doug used 8/27 gear ratio. Notice the use of 3 motor screws.
