The Pete Zimmerman, Mike Steube tech inspection saga continues. Looks like Pete finally passes tech inspection without any problems!

Phil Nylands' 3rd place Concours car.

image

Nice to see Graham Hill join our SoCal D3 racing!

image

Here's an F1 entry which was too late to enter the Concours judging. It's a shame since it would have won Concours hands down.

image

Guess who built this great looking F1?

image

Hint, you will not be surprised who built it.

image

The front "A" arms are a nice touch and deemed D3 legal because they simulate the look of F1 struts.

image

The rear transmission box and battery detail is awesome. Bryan added this detail to allow the chassis to extend beyond the rear axle and be covered per the rules.

image

Here's a bottom view of the car. Well, it's none other than Bryan Warmack's latest F1 car. Bryan used the main parts from his new kit along with a thick (1/8") piece of brass on the side/rear of the chassis. More details of this great new car from Bryan in the F1 race results.

image

D3 F1 "A" Main podium, L-R, Mike Steube 2nd, Bryan Warmack 1st, John Cukras 3rd This is "Deja Vu all over again! (40 yrs later)" Congrats Bryan on your F1 win. Your new F1 car is Super Sano!

Mike's new chassis on the left. Bryan's new chassis in the middle and John's (new?) chassis on the right.

image

Mike Steube's new F1 chassis for the BPR Flat track

image

Mike's new chassis incorporates some new features

image

Mike added more weight up front

image

Side view of Mike's chassis shows the floating body mount which also provides added weight

image

The motor bracket is thicker than normal

image

This rear views shows the thicker motor bracket and additional brass plate on the bottom portion with the gear cutout. Mike's new F1 weighs about 132 grams!

image

Bryan Warmack's winning F1 car. This is a new F1 for Bryan. Although Bryan was too late to enter the Concours judging, it's obvious he would have won Concours also.

image

Bryan's new F1 chassis uses the main section and front from the new Warmack kit.

image

Bryan added a "1/8" thick brass piece to surround the chassis including the rear end. This piece includes a center section for added weight.

image

Bottom view clearly shows the 1/8" thick brass piece which surrounds the chassis and rear axle. Note the extended rear overhang.

image

Close up view of Bryan's new F1 chassis shows the front axle upright struts (simulated). Note the use of lightweight motor lead wires.

image

Close up view of body mounts also clearly shows the 1/8" thick side frame with the center piece attached.

image

Another view of the rear shows the heft side rails. Total weight of car is 133 grams

image

To meet the D3 rule for no exposed chassis (other than front suspension struts), Bryan cleverly (and concours minded) added this custom made gearbox, battery and oil reservoir to cover the rear portion of the cover.

image

John Cukras' 3rd place chassis. This is similar to previous Cukras' F1 chassis.

image

Bottom view of John's F1 chassis appears routine except for the middle section.

image

The front view of John's chassis shows the floating center body mount section.

image

John prefers to use copper motor clips made from copper tubing.

image

Rear view of John's chassis shows extensive bracing around the rear axle.

image

Yoshi Akiyama donated a special raffle prize (Plafit NASCAR) and presents the beautiful car to the lucky raffle winner, Steve Walker. Yoshi is returning to Japan in a few weeks and the SoCal D3 racers want to wish him the best.

image

24 of the 29 D3 Can Am entries line up for tech inspection. The others as usual are doing last minute thrashing!

image

As in previous SoCal D3 Can Am races, the variety of scratchbuilt cars is growing. Once you build your own cars, you can let your creativity run wild!

image

Today's Can Am tech inspection attracted a crowd. Mike Steube cautioned racers to be sure to meet the 1/2" inch maximum spoiler height. Some racers were confused about the rule until Mike, Paul and others helped to explain how to measure the spoiler height (be sure to include the built in body spoiler height)
