Today I'm charting an unknown territory for me. It's the pit area for what type of slotcars?

image

Hey, that's a familiar hat on that slotcar box. Looks like "John the Jet's" hat.

image

An empty pit area, where are the racers?

image

Here they are. Busy racing slotcars. HO slotcars!

image

This HO track is located at John Wakamatsu's home. It's called WakaDome.

90 feet in length. 24 foot straightaway. 6 lane plastic Tomy track by Racemasters.

image

Slot car racers all look the same no matter what type of slotcars they race.

image

That's Slotblog's Oscar "The Bugman" Morales calling the race.

image

HO slotracing requires a different preparation than 1/24 slotracing. Notice the complete rear end setups (wheels, gears, axles).

image

HO racers are no different than other racers. They always manage somehow to fill their slotcar boxes to the brim.

image

Got enough tires, gears?

image

Enough cars?

HO racing in progress. L-R, John Wakamatsu, Jim Williams, Mark Brown, Eddie Torres, Paul Katata, Gary Morgan and Morris ? turn marshall while Oscar Morales race directs.

John "the Jet" Cukras turn marshalls while Ben Vasquez and John Wakamatsu race.

image

The small size of an HO race car is apparent by the size of the lane sticker.

image

Being that I'm not famiiar with HO slotcars, I'll try to describe a few cars. Notice the multiple magnets which gives these fast, small cars great track holding power.

image

image

The unlimited class of HO cars typically may use about 30T of #32 wire.

image

image

The gear ratio used for today's "long" track (90 feet in length) is about 3 to 1 or lower. Notice how the rear axle is a press fit into the chassis. This allows the racer to quickly change the entire rear axle assembly (tires, crown gear). Also notice how the pickup braid is connected directly to the armature brushes.

image

One of Jim Williams' very nicely painted HO cars. It's not easy painting these very small bodies!

Race results for the "unlimited" race.

The "NEO" class race results.

image

Six lane plastic Tomy track by Racemasters. Wakamatsu's HO track is 90 feet in length, which is a long track by HO standards.

image

"Modified" race. L-R, Tibby, Eddie Torres, Ben Vasquez, Morris, Oscar Morales, Gary Morgan

image

image

"Modified" race results. This is a popular racing class as all 11 racers in attendance participated in this race.

image

The remaining 5 cars are lined up for the 2nd Semi "Modified" race.

"Modified" racers, L-R, Mark Brown, John Cukras, Paul Katata, Jim Williams, John Wakamatsu

Remaining "Modified" racers. There were two other racing classes contested, Hardbodies and Super Stock.

The only one who didn't enjoy today's races was this unwanted visitor. He was promptly put to rest, ouch.
